Their Story

The Nancy and Jim Steinmark Love Story

Luke AFB Arizona was the site where two Air Force families were unknowingly setting the stage for a 50 year marriage. The Meneeley family arrived from Misawa AFB in the summer of 1957 and Jim Steinmark arrived from Great Lakes Naval Base Corps School on February 4th, 1958. Nancy was starting school at Agua Fria High School, located in Avondale, AZ and Jim was being assigned to the 4510th Hospital group.

In the fall of 1959 Jim took a part-time job running the concession stand in the Luke AFB theater. Soon thereafter he noticed a young blond girl coming to the movies with a group of high school kids. He immediately began to develop a plan on how he could meet her. When he did finally meet her, he fell head over heels in love; as did she with him!!! Jim soon introduced himself to the family and the young couple was married on April 1, 1960 in a Lutheran church in Glendale, AZ.

On March 10, 1961 a son was born to the marriage. James Jr. was born in the base hospital. During the next several years the young family lived in two different apartments located around the base.

In the February of 1963 Jim was relocated to Weisbaden, West Germany and in March, Nancy and Jimmy joined him.  Nine months from the day that Nancy and Jimmy Jr. arrived in Germany, December 12th, a daughter by the name of Elizabeth was born into the family. She was born at the base hospital as well!!. The family of four spent the next 3 years in Germany, moving back to the good old USA in February 1966. During their time in Germany they made many friends, but met a special family, by the name of Helen & Floyd Strawser and their girls. The Steinmarks and the Strawsers have had many great times together and plan many more to come. They also have stayed in touch with their base housing stairwell friends of Fred & Marge Heuston.

Jim, Nancy, Jimmy and Elizabeth spent 4 years at Wright Patterson AFB Ohio moving to Sheppard AFB, TX in November of 1969. On December 17, 1970 Kristen was born into the family. Guess where she was born? Yup, she as well was born at the base hospital.  Thank you Uncle Sam!!!!

The USAF then took the family to New Mexico and Hawaii during the years of 1974-1979. In 1979 Jimmy was the first to leave the family to go to college, begin his own career and family. He was married in 1982.  1979-1982 found Jim, Nancy and the girls at Tyndall AFB, FL. In 1982 the three of them moved back to Hawaii and spent three great years. Following her marriage in June 1982 Elizabeth remained behind in Hawaii to finish college. Jim, Nancy and Kris moved to Mesa AZ where Jim began his post-USAF work life. In 1989 Kristin graduated from high school in Mesa AZ and was married to Derrick Weese in 1992.

Jim and Nancy lived in Arizona for 7 years before moving to Mandeville Louisiana in the spring of 1992. From 1992 to 2005 they lived in Louisiana, Madisonville, Kentucky and Milton, Florida. In July 2005 they moved to a Del Webb community in Summerfield, FL which may be their final retirement home.
